How well do you know your donors?Prospect research can prioritize the donor prospects in your database and help you determine an ask amount. You have worked hard to acquire donors. Now you can unlock the secrets of prospect research to upgrade your donors and cultivate major gifts. Learn how to leverage prospect research to methodically identify, track, and ask prospects for major gifts, even in a small development office. Bring your own laptop and you can log-on to the internet if you would like to follow along. Training includes an interactive game and the Search Tips for Fundraisers publication.
Intended Audience
This is a beginner/intermediate workshop designed for development professionals and new prospect researchers who want to use information to raise more money and guide strategy. For you to receive the maximum benefit from this workshop, your nonprofit should at least have a donor database and an active fundraising program, including annual fund and major gifts.

- Outcomes: What is the difference between using a consultant and not using one?
- How might a nonprofit determine a scope of work and why this should be done with the consultant’s input, not before talking to them?
- What should I do to make sure I get what I need and not 2 million other things I don't?
- How does one budget for a consultant? What kinds of fee structures exist?
- What criteria might be used for the hiring decision?
- What are the most successful relationships like and why do they work?
- How do I help my board or other supporter understand that money must be invested to make money?”

In this workshop participants will learn how prospect research is applied in fundraising and will learn where and how to find basic information on prospects with free sources. Each participant will have her own computer and will learn by listening, watching and then doing. Participants should bring two major-gift prospect names and their contact information to class (home address, phone and business information are the best matches). Prospect information is confidential and will not be shared with the class.
Intended Audience:
This is a beginner’s workshop designed for anyone interested in learning how to find information on individuals. Participants should be able to navigate the internet easily.
